10/11/2019 Powell Point, Red Rock Canyon, and More Bryce
10/11/2019 Powell Point, Red Rock Canyon, and More Bryce
Woke up this morning to 14 degrees. Decided this was a good
morning to go exploring in the truck. We decided to drive north out of the park
to see where the road would lead us. Finally ended up on a forest service road
which took us to Pine Lake Camp Ground and a good view of Powell Point. The
road was not bad but very little interesting to see unless you are in to beef
cows.
Next we headed up 12 to Red Rock Canyon. We drove through
here when arriving at Bryce but did not stop. This time we took time to take
some pictures. There are two tunnels you drive thru.
By this time lunch was calling. We stopped at Bryce Canyon
Pines Restaurant. This is a place we had eaten at on our previous trip. I can
tell you the Boysenberry pie is every bit as good as it was then.
The afternoon was spent catching a few highlight in the park
we had missed (Bryce Point, Inspiration point and Bryce Lodge).
10/10/2019 Sunrise Point and Rainbow Point Bus Tour
10/10/2019 Sunrise Point and Rainbow Point Bus Tour
I was up early this morning. At 7:30am I was out the door to head to Sunrise Point to catch the sunrise (before breakfast). It turned out to be disappointing. The colors were just bland and it was very cold 17 degrees. Needless to say I did not last long and was back to the trailer for breakfast the Sue had waiting. I have no pictures from this to bore you with.
Now for a solar/battery report, We had taken the batteries down to 51% state of charge (SOC) out of 200 amp hours. The solar panels were only giving us 2 or 3 amps of charge because of the shading by the trees. This has made it necessary to break out the generator to get us back to 100%. The generator gives us around 30 amps of charging which makes it fairly quick to recover in just a few hours. With the cold we do not want to be without power.
After Breakfast it was off to hike the Queen’s Garden Trail 1 mile down and 1 mile up. It is a very different view from down in the Canyon than from the rim. I hope you can see this from the pictures.
In the afternoon Sue had signed us up for a free Rainbow Bus Tour out to Rainbow Point. Other stops on the return trip included Yovimpa Point, Ponderosa Canyon, Agua Canyon, Natural Bridge and Fairyland Amphitheater. The bus driver provide lots of historic, Nature, and sites all along the trip. From Yovimpa Point we could see the smoke form the power plant at Lake Powell, along with the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, The Pink Sand dunes, and Zion, all from this one spot (of course we were taking the driver word for all of this. This point is the highest spot along the Grand Escalante Staircase.

10/09/2019 Drive to Bryce National Park
10/09/2019 Drive to Bryce National Park
Today a short 60 mile drive from Zion to Bryce. We are camped in the Sunset campground. Just a few RV spots on only loop A and it was first come first served. We are in spot 274. The site is a little narrow and shaded. Guess the solar will have diminished capability. We rode the shuttle to the visitor center but were both feeling the effects of yesterdays hike. It was nap time back at the trailer.
This evening we went across the street to Sunset Point for pictures at sunset.
